How to make your dark circles disappear?

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

Are you tired of looking tired?

Do you have no idea where to even start with covering up dark circles? Is your concealer not quite doing the job? Are you worried about too many products looking cakey?

These are questions I get asked all the time as a makeup artist. It is definitely a very common concern, so don't feel alone. Remember to take care of your eyes with a good eye cream. This creates a good base to work with and eye creams are specifically made for that area since the skin around your eyes is thinner. Here are my favourite products:

I do have some exciting information for you…you can actually cover up your dark circles without having to use very much product AND its super easy! The first step is to colour correct BEFORE you apply your concealer. This makes a BIG difference! The nice part about colour correcting is you only have to use the product on the dark parts of your undereye. Do NOT put it all over your undereye in heavy amounts. This is not needed and this will create a more cake look which we do NOT want!

When you look in the mirror, tilt your head down and look straight ahead, and you will actually be able to see exactly where your dark areas are. Just apply the colour corrector or eye brightener to those spots. A very tiny amount goes a long way. REMEMBER, this is not concealer. This is a colour corrector. It will brighten/neutralize the skin tone. You still need to add the concealer afterwards. It does create an extra step in your makeup routine, but I promise, it’s a super quick one and totally worth the effort.

A really great eye brightener that you will love and I can't recommend enough is from Becca. It comes in a little paint pot and literally lasts forever! Remember when I said you only need a tiny amount? Well that’s why it lasts forever. This product is definitely worth the investment. And it is one of the best on the market. It simply comes in 2 colours, light to med or med to dark. If you don’t like the idea of a paint pot container, another couple of good colour correctors that come with a wand are the Naked by Urban Decay ones, and the Sephora brand. Pink is for light to medium toned skin; peach is for medium to dark toned skin.

So once we have colour corrected, the next step is to apply concealer. You will want to get colour matched at your local Sephora (currently on hold with covid) or take the online quiz at www.sephora.com. With concealer, you can choose the colour that matches your tone or you can go 1-2 shades lighter. Some really great concealers that you might like are the Nars creamy concealer and the Huda Beauty concealer. I am also a huge fan of the Tarte Shapetape. Let me remind you, you only need a small amount to do the job! This way, it will also prevent creasing.

On another note, many people stress that they are concerned with their lines showing when wearing makeup. Keep in mind that the appearance of an EVEN skin tone is what makes you appear younger. So, don’t worry so much about makeup in your lines as long as it’s not creasing. If you find your concealer is creasing, you may want to try a different one. I, personally, am a big creaser, and the concealers I’ve mentioned above work the best on me. However, keep in mind everyone is different and sometimes you may have to try a couple to see which one works best on you.

I really hope this has answered some of your questions about dark under-eye circles. Please comment and let me know if you try this! And of course, if you have any makeup questions do not hesitate to ask.
